Public speaking… with a comedic twist

January 11th, 2012

This is a great month for creative inspiration with the Sydney Festival taking place until end of January. Here at Presentation Studio we are particularly excited about seeing the Bright Club sessions at The Famous Spiegeltent.

Hosted by comedian and public speaker, James O’Loghlin and showing late on Wednesday nights, the Bright Club presents an impressive line-up of lecturers and researchers from the University of Sydney as they turn their academic minds to comedy. Each speaker has just 8-minutes to present their area of academic speciality in a comedy stand-up routine.

Most of us have had to present at some point in our lives, many of us do it every day but just imagine how nerve wracking it must be when your main aim is to make your audience laugh.

However as with any type of presentation, preparation is the key to help conquering those nerves. So if you are taking the plunge into stand-up comedy or just need to present at the next board meeting, keep these top presentation tips in mind:

Engage your Audience
Stand-up comedy routines actively engage the audience. Comedians interact with the crowd and ask them questions which help to set up their next joke. In business presentations, rather than having your audience sit for an hour whilst you present your PowerPoint slides, make time in your presentation to interact with them. This can be as simple as asking for a ‘show of hands’ to a question or if you have a larger group you could use live sms polling or voting technologies.

Stick to Time
The speakers at Bright Club have only 8-minutes to present their routine. Whatever your timings make sure that your structure your presentation with a clear flow: beginning, middle and end and when rehearsing your timings allow for unexpected interruptions such as questions (or heckling!) so that you won’t feel flustered if they arise.

A fantastic tip from Nancy Duarte is to prepare two possible natural endings to your presentation, so if you do find yourself running out of time you can relax knowing that you have a safety net and your audience won’t know the difference!

Bright Club is showing at The Spiegeltent for only three weeks and kicks off tonight, Wednesday 11th January.

Ignite Sydney- Sparking Creativity

February 14th, 2011

Hello, my name is Angela and I admit it… I’m a Geek! Just two days into my brand new role as Account Manager at Presentation Studio I eagerly attended my first ever Ignite Sydney event.

Inspirational, thought provoking, fun and fast paced, each presenter had only 5 minutes and 20 slides to capture the attention of the audience.

Presentation Studio offer advice and design support to all speakers for Ignite, so it was really interesting to see the PowerPoint presentations in action.

Highlights from the night for me were Rebecca Lehman, from internet radio station Blakely city talk, and her engaging and upbeat presentation on cycling in Sydney.  I have just moved here from London where there is a great bicycle system in place and I for one will be making the most of the beautiful Sydney weather and cycling to work.

Muhsin Karim presented an entertaining and amusing look at how different situations can make the same world we see look perceptually different. This explains how that glass of wine looks so much more appealing towards the end of the working week.

The event was organised and expertly hosted by Stephen Lead who took an impromptu moment in the spotlight himself to talk about our unnecessary use of bottled water – very true.

So, all in all, I thought the night was a great success. The venue, Oxford Art Factory, created the perfect vibe for the event and the turn out was fantastic. The PowerPoint design wasn’t too bad either!  I’ll definitely be back.

Getting ready for Ignite

February 19th, 2010

The countdown is on for the much anticipated Ignite Sydney 4 event, being held here in Sydney at Oxford Art Factory on Tuesday 2nd March. This is part of the bigger ‘Global Ignite Week’ event where 40+ cities around the globe each host their own Ignite event at the same time.

We are big supporters of Ignite, as a showcase and celebration of a series of short presentations delivered by a range of speakers on ……… whatever!  The format: each presenter has 5 minutes to present 20 slides which are set on a 15 second automatic transitions on a topic of their choice. These simple yet effective parameters force speakers to consider their core message and wrap it up into a punchy, succinct and often entertaining pack – the way a lot of presentations should be!

We are now seeing large corporates adopt similar styles for their speakers at conferences and internal team days as way to encourage creativity, refine content and inject a bit of entertainment into what can be tediously long days.

Here’s some quick tips to help you create a short and snappy presentation:

  • Know  your audience – this will help you shape your presentation
  • Organise your key messages on paper before you even open PowerPoint
  • Choose powerful and relevant images that help the audience understand your message
  • Rehearse, rehearse and rehearse!  – if you know your content, the rest comes naturally

See you at Ignite!
